From its appearance alone, it's clear that the Subaru Impreza WRX STI means business. Based on the car that will challenge for the World Rally Championship title in 2008, the road-going WRX STI features muscular lines, from its low and aggressive nose, to its wide fenders and large rear roof spoiler. The spoiler, underbody diffuser and ground effects combine to create tremendous aerodynamic advantages. The HID headlights provide superior visibility at all times. And the performance tires mounted on ultra-light BBS wheels offer incredible grip. Sometimes looks can be deceiving. But not in this case.

At Subaru, there is no such thing as a high-performance car that achieves anything less than superb safety standards. In the Subaru Impreza WRX STI, the lofty active safety standards are set by the massive grip of Subaru symmetrical full-time AWD, the added security of a multi-mode Vehicle Dynamics Control system and the immense stopping power of the new STI-branded Brembo® braking system. In the event that these systems are not sufficient to help the driver avoid an accident, the WRX STI provides even more reassurance with a highly rigid body, a new ring-shaped reinforcement frame and no fewer than six airbags.

Safety Highlights

Braking
	In collaboration with braking specialists Brembo®, the new WRX STI has been designed to provide unprecedented stopping performance. The system includes four-wheel ventilated, wide diameter disc brakes with four calipers for each front wheel and two calipers for each rear wheel. The brakes are precisely controlled with the help of Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist and a Hill Holder system. In addition, the Super Sport ABS includes a lateral-g sensor that controls individual wheel brakes separately for optimum braking accuracy.
Reinforcement Frame
	Subaru's advanced ring-shaped reinforcement frame combines the roof, door pillars, window pillars and floor into one interconnected, energy-absorbing cell. Strengthened by high-tensile strength steel at key points, this body structure is highly effective at dissipating impact energy and preventing intrusions into the passenger compartment.
Airbags
	To increase the level of passive safety even further, the WRX STI features dual front airbags with dual-stage deployment and built-in occupant sensors, dual front seat side-impact airbags and dual side-curtain airbags as standard equipment.
Head Restraints
	Subaru was one of the first manufacturers to introduce front-seat active head restraints. These restraints automatically move forward in a rear-end collision to reduce shock to the head and neck.
Child Safety
	The ISO-FIX/LATCH child seat anchor system and three-point seatbelts for the rear seats enable you to safely share your love of the open road with even the youngest of passengers.

Engineering

Gets your motor running.
As impressive as the Subaru Impreza WRX STI is on paper, it's even more so in real life. Still, the statistics are worth noting: a high-performance turbocharged 4-cylinder SUBARU BOXER engine producing 305 horsepower and 290 lb-ft of torque (70% of it available between 2,000 and 7,000 rpm). An estimated 0-100 km/h time of just 4.9 seconds, and a top speed of 250 km/h.

With this kind of power under foot, it's imperative that the driver has all the tools available to ensure precise control at all times and under all conditions. The tool kit begins with the proven Subaru symmetrical full-time AWD system, now even more advanced for higher performance.

This system incorporates a multi-mode Driver Controlled Centre Differential (DCCD) to customize torque transfer front to rear and multi-mode Vehicle Dynamics Control system to further personalize the driving experience.

The rally-bred fully independent suspension system comprises a new double wishbone rear suspension, inverted front struts and numerous other suspension geometry changes to expertly absorb imperfections in the road. A new wider track and shorter rear overhang are designed to help you carve through turns with greater ease. Meanwhile, the short-throw, 6-speed manual transmission ensures the power is transferred to the ground quickly and precisely.

Engineering Highlights

SI-DRIVE
	With the SI-DRIVE (Subaru Intelligent Drive) engine management system, drivers can choose among three modes to match their mood. Intelligent Mode (I) delivers smoothness in low-traction conditions and boosts fuel economy by as much as 10%; it's perfect for driving around town or motoring down the highway. Sport Mode (S) is for all-around use; it provides linear throttle response for everyday driving situations and extra engine power when needed. Sport Sharp Mode (S#) exploits the full potential of the SUBARU BOXER engine; it delivers instant throttle response for maximum enjoyment.
Multi-mode VDC
	For maximum flexibility, there are three Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) system settings to choose from. Normal mode provides the integrated safety and stability of Vehicle Dynamics Control system, Traction Control System (TCS), and Super Sport ABS with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) to enhance control. Traction mode cancels the engine torque reduction traction control and delays the intervention of Super Sport ABS and Vehicle Dynamics Control system. With this mode, the driver maintains more control over the performance of the vehicle. For use mainly when attempting to drive out of a snowy or muddy situation, Off mode cancels all other controls apart from Super Sport ABS and the Hill Holder system.
Transmission
	The new WRX STI features a close-ratio, 6-speed manual transmission strengthened to withstand the demands of performance driving. This AWD transmission, combined with the short-throw shifter and multi-mode DCCD, promotes agile handling and the smooth progression of power at all times.

While most purebred performance cars demand that the driver makes all sorts of compromises (no carrying anything bigger than a briefcase, no driving in anything less than perfect weather), the Subaru Impreza WRX STI is as practical as it is high-powered. The interior features a variety of storage compartments, 60/40-split folding rear seats and ample room for both passengers and cargo.
